What is Anal Itch and How Can I Seek Relief?

Anal itch is a persistent annoyance that occurs around your anal opening and creates the urge to scratch the area that is affected. An itchy anus is a common symptom of hemorrhoids which are swollen anal veins that develop on the inside of your anal canal and on the outside of the anal opening. When the hemorrhoid condition becomes irritated from straining during bowel movements or passing hard stools itching can be one of the symptoms that occur as the result of irritated hemorrhoids.

If you develop anal itching as the result of hemorrhoids it can be really annoying and downright embarrassing. The urge to scratch the area becomes irresistible if not treated accordingly. The good news is that there are ways that you can treat an itchy anus to avoid the annoyance and an embarrassing situation when you have the urge to scratch.

Warm Sitz Baths

Sit in the bath for up to 20 minutes several times each day and then make sure you dry the area thoroughly before dressing. To help provide extra soothing relief you can also apply a small amount of baby powder to the area after each bath session.

Cold Compresses

Homemade cold compresses can help provide relief from an itchy anus. All you have to do is place some ice inside a cloth and apply it to the affected area a few times each day. The cold temperature will provide a numbing effect on the area that you are tempted to scratch.
