Causes of Hemorrhoids in Men and How to Determine If You Are at Risk

Causes of hemorrhoids in men are associated with the overall common causes of hemorrhoids however; men may be less apt to discuss the matter and may often suffer in silence as a result of keeping the condition under wraps. Although no one likes to discuss hemorrhoids it is actually a common condition in both men and women of all ages.

Men who are affected by hemorrhoids may experience moderate to severe discomfort when trying to pass a stool or when sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time which can be very a painful experience depending upon the type of hemorrhoid condition.

Types of Hemorrhoids in Men

Hemorrhoids are veins that are located in the anal area and become swollen as a result of undue pressure that is applied to the anal veins when straining during bowel movements and passing hard stools. There are basically two different types of hemorrhoids in men: internal and external.

  • Internal Hemorrhoids

  • Internal hemorrhoids are swollen anal veins that are located on the inside of the anal canal and can become irritated during strained bowel movements. If the condition persists they can advance to the outside of the anal opening which is condition known as a prolapsed hemorrhoid.

  • External Hemorrhoids

  • An external hemorrhoid is a soft lump that forms on the exterior of the anal opening. If left untreated it can develop into a thrombosed hemorrhoid which occurs when a blood clot develops inside the hemorrhoid tissue. External hemorrhoids are generally more painful than internal hemorrhoids.

So what are some of the causes of hemorrhoids in men and how do you know if you are at risk?

Common Hemorrhoid Causes

Although there are a lot of different factors that can cause a hemorrhoid condition to develop in both men and women, there are a few a few common causes of hemorrhoids in men.

  • Heavy Lifting

  • If you work in a profession that requires heavy lifting such as construction or other, this can cause stress on the walls of your anal canal. If you have an existing hemorrhoid condition this can cause it to get worse. If you are prone to developing hemorrhoids heavy lifting can cause the onset of a hemorrhoid attack.

  • Reading on the Toilet

  • If you spend prolonged periods of time on the toilet you can aggravate an existing hemorrhoid condition or cause hemorrhoids to develop.

How to Know If You Are at Risk

Everyone is susceptible to developing hemorrhoids and in fact over 60 percent of people develop hemorrhoids at one point or another during their life. Men that have a family medical history of hemorrhoid conditions are at risk of developing hemorrhoids at any time.

If you engage in strenuous exercise or heavy lifting on a regular basis you are also at risk of developing hemorrhoids. On the flip side, if you lead a sedentary life and eat a low fiber diet you can also put yourself at risk of developing hemorrhoids.

Finally, you are at risk of developing hemorrhoids if you experience frequent bouts with constipation or diarrhea which is the leading cause of hemorrhoids in men. Once you develop hemorrhoids it is highly possible that the condition will return but the good news is that most hemorrhoid attacks can be treated within a few days of flare up.
