Common Hemorrhoid Problems

anal itching Over fifty percent of the world’s population suffers from common hemorrhoid problems related to a hemorrhoid condition at one point or another during their lifetime. Hemorrhoids are a common occurrence in a lot of people and every hemorrhoid condition has common problems that are associated with having hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoid problems can range from being a mild annoyance to being quite painful and the types of problems you experience depend upon the type of hemorrhoid condition that you have. Here is an overview of the different types of hemorrhoid conditions and the common problems that are associated with each type.

Internal Hemorrhoids

Internal hemorrhoids are swollen varicose veins that form on the inside of the anal canal. Internal hemorrhoids are generally not painful but they can exhibit some hemorrhoid problems depending upon their stage of severity.

  • Anal Itching

  • A common problem with internal hemorrhoids is anal itching. The itching occurs as a result of internal hemorrhoids that have become irritated as the result of passing hard stools or straining during bowel movements.

  • Rectal Bleeding

  • Rectal bleeding is a common problem with internal hemorrhoids and happens as a result of constipation and passing a hard stool. The stool causes friction and pressure against the hemorrhoid which causes it to rupture and bleed which then classifies it as a bleeding hemorrhoid. In most cases the bleeding is mild and can be noticed on toilet paper, in the toilet water, or in your stool.

  • External Discomfort

  • If internal hemorrhoids become prolapsed they can cause significant pain and discomfort because they protrude on the outside of the anal opening. In this case, the pain and discomfort is a common hemorrhoid problem that may require medical attention.

  • Mucous Discharge

  • A mild discharge of mucous is not uncommon with an internal hemorrhoid condition. You may experience this discharge indefinitely and without advanced notice and it is usually a sign that internal hemorrhoids have become irritated.

External Hemorrhoids

External hemorrhoids are swollen varicose veins that have formed on the outside of the anal opening. Unlike internal hemorrhoids external hemorrhoids can be much more uncomfortable. Some of the common problems associated with external hemorrhoids include:

  • Pain

  • Since external hemorrhoids can easily become irritated by sitting for prolonged periods of time or other factors, pain is a common problem that can occur with this type of hemorrhoid condition. If the external hemorrhoids have become thrombosed where they have developed a blood clot it is common for this type of hemorrhoid to cause a significant amount of pain.

  • Anal Itching

  • Anal itching is a common hemorrhoid problem since external hemorrhoids can become easily irritated. This creates the urge to scratch the area which can cause further irritation to the condition.

  • Rectal Bleeding

  • If external hemorrhoids become irritated and they can rupture when pressure is applied to the affected area which causes rectal bleeding. External hemorrhoids can also bleed as the result of passing a hard stool or straining during bowel movements.

If a hemorrhoid condition is allowed to get worse some of the other common hemorrhoid problems that occur include pain and discomfort following a surgical procedure, problems sitting or standing for long periods of time, problems with constipation or diarrhea, and problems passing a stool if the hemorrhoid is protruding from the anal opening.

Common hemorrhoid problems are not fun and they can be a downright nuisance. If you treat hemorrhoids during the early stages you can avoid a lot of common problems with hemorrhoids.
