AnalPertains to the anus
Anal fissureRupture in the skin of the anal canal that exposes the sphincter muscle and causes severe pain, normally extends from the dentate line to the anal opening.
Anal stenosisNarrowing of the anal canal
Anal ulcerSevere and chronic anal fissure
Anal wartFleshy and lumpy growth in the anal canal or the anus, often due to the direct sexual contact.
AnorectalPertaining to the anus and rectum
AnoscopeA medical device in the form of a long tube with a light attached at one end that is used to visually inspect the anal canal.
AnoscopyA procedure by which the anal canal and rectum is inspected for anorectal polyps using an anoscope.
AnusTerminal end of the digestive system composed of two circular sphincter muscles. The anus usually remains closed, but the sphincter muscles relax and allow the anus to open for elimination of feces.
Barium enemaEnema made up of a solution of barium sulfate that is taken to assist with x-ray exposure where it can show any bulges in the colon that are due to polyps, ulcers, or tumors.
Barron ligatorInstrument used to place rubber band ligations on internal hemorrhoids
BICAP coagulationMethod of cauterizing and removing hemorrhoids using electricity with a Bipolar Circumactive probe (BACAP).
Cancer ScreeningCancer screening is looking for cancer before a person has any symptoms.
CauterizeTo sear with the help of caustic agents. This is used to destroy affected tissue or prevent the spread of infection.
ChronicContinuing for a long period
Chronic hemorrhoidsRecurring hemorrhoids that are persistent for a long period of time.
ColitisInflammation of the colon lining
ColonThe large intestine or bowel. Part of the digestive system with the primary function of absorbing water and salt from digested food, which leads to the eventual formation of feces.

ColonoscopeA 75-inch long flexible tube with a camera and special attachments used to cauterize polyps in the colon and rectum.
ColonoscopyA visual medical exam of the colon to detect polyps using a colonoscope.

ConstipationDifficult or strained passage of feces
Crohn’s DiseaseInflammation of the colon caused by blockage due to the development of scar tissues causing abscesses, fissures, fistulas, and skin tags.
CryosurgerySurgical procedure to remove tissues with a freezing process
CT scanComputed Tomography scan (CT) to perform a virtual colonoscopy using a computer.
Dentate lineRing of tissue arranged on top of the anal canal separating the anus from the rectum.
Digital examinationMedical examination of the anal canal where the doctor uses fingers to probe into the anal canal to locate hemorrhoids or polyps.
ElectrocauteryProcess using electricity to cauterize tissues.
EndoscopyVisual exam of a body cavity with the help of an endoscope.
External hemorrhoidsHemorrhoid located around the anus.
FissureSame as anal fissure.
FistulaTunnel within the anal canal extending from an infected gland to an external opening in the skin around the anus.

Gastrointestinal system or tractDigestive organ extending from the esophagus to the anus.
HemorrhoidSwelling of veins in the anorectal area.
Hemorrhoid bundleCluster of hemorrhoids.
HemorrhoidectomySurgical process to cut off hemorrhoidal tissues.
Hemorrhoids skin tagA hemorrhoids skin tag is the same as a skin tag.
IBSSame as Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
ImpactionSticking of dried and hardened feces within the intestines.
Inflammatory Bowel DiseaseGastrointestinal disorder due to inflammation of the affected tissues. Common types include ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
Infrared CoagulationCauterization and removal of hemorrhoids using infrared light.
Internal HemorrhoidsHemorrhoids that occur inside the rectum.
Intestinal Transit TimeTime that it takes food to travel through the intestine and pass as a stool. This is normally used when trying to relate diet to digestion time.
Irritable Bowel SyndromeDisorder characterized by bouts of constipation, diarrhea, cramps, and gas.

Laser HemorrhoidectomyRemoval of hemorrhoids using laser beams.
Mucous colitisSame as irritable bowel syndrome
Nervous bowelSame as irritable bowel syndrome
Polyp (colon)An abnormal growth in the lining of the colon that may be benign or malignant. The malignant type may lead to colorectal cancer.
ProctologistA doctor that specializes in the treatment of anorectal diseases.
ProtoscopeA ten-inch tubular device used for anal and rectal exams.
ProtoscopyVisual exam of the anus and rectum using a protoscope.
Prolapsed HemorrhoidA swollen internal hemorrhoid that bulges out of the anal opening.
Protruding hemorrhoidA protruding hemorrhoid is the same as a prolapsed hemorrhoid.
PruritusItching
Pruritus AniAnal itching, a common symptom of hemorrhoids
RectumEnd part of the colon, including the anal canal and storage space for feces before elimination.
Rubber band ligationMethod of removing hemorrhoid by tying it with a rubber band to stop it from getting a supply of blood. This causes the hemorrhoid to dry up and fall off.
Ruptured hemorrhoidsBlood clot within an external hemorrhoid that is bursting through the skin.
Sclerosing agentSolution that irritates tissue causing scarring and hardening.
SclerotherapyThis is a method of removing internal hemorrhoids by using a Sclerosing agent.
Severe hemorrhoidsThose hemorrhoids that are graded as fourth degree are considered severe. These hemorrhoids usually require surgery to remove them.
Sigmoidoscope24-inch flexible tube used for rectal and colon examination.
SigmoidoscopyVisual exam of rectum and colon using a Sigmoidoscope.
Sitz bathWarm water bath used to bring temporary relief from hemorrhoidal swelling and pain. A Sitz bath can be done on a special basin which is placed on top of the closed toilet or in the bathtub.
Skin TagA hemorrhoids skin tag is flabby skin that is remnant of a thrombosed hemorrhoid that is hanging out of the anal opening.
Small bowelSame as small intestine.
Small intestineThe initial part of the intestine involved in the digestion of food and absorption of nutrients.
Sphincter muscleCircular muscle that remains closed on contraction and open on relaxation. Controls opening and closing the anus.
Stool softenerNon-prescription medication or bulking agent used to make stools moist and and soft and easier to pass.
Strangulated hemorrhoidA strangulated hemorrhoid is one in which the blood supply has been cut off.
Thrombosed hemorrhoidHard lump of an external hemorrhoid containing a blood clot.
Ulcerative colitisUlcerative colitis is a common inflammatory bowel disease. Chronic colitis is characterized by pain, weight loss, and bloody diarrhea.
Ulcerative proctitisWhen ulcerative colitis affects only the lowest part of the colon -- the rectum -- it is called Ulcerative proctitis.
Valves of HoustonFolds in the rectum that store fecal matter before elimination. These valves exert pressure for elimination when stools become heavy, triggering the urge to defecate.
Varicose veinsSwollen veins that change shape and become weak leading to improper functioning.
VasoconstrictorsSubstances that narrow the blood vessels resulting from contraction of the muscular wall of the vessels. These may be used to reduce blood flow to bleeding hemorrhoids.
