Different Types of Hemorrhoid Surgery

hemorrhoid surgery If you have tried other types of treatment for hemorrhoids and have not had much success, hemorrhoid surgery may be the only remaining option. Although surgery is something that should not be taken lightly, if it has become evident from your physician’s recommendation that surgery is the only option it may help you to review the different types of options that are available.

The more educated you are on the different hemorrhoid surgical options, the better the chances are that you and your physician can make an informed decision as to which option is most appropriate for your specific hemorrhoid condition. The type of surgery that is required will also depend upon what type of hemorrhoid condition you have (internal or external) and the degree of its severity. Here is an overview of the different types of hemorrhoid surgery.

Rubber Band Ligation

Rubber band ligation is one of the common surgical treatments for hemorrhoids and can be performed in outpatient clinics and doctor’s offices. This type of surgery for hemorrhoids is performed with a local anesthetic and treats a hemorrhoid condition by cutting off the blood flow to the hemorrhoid by applying a rubber band to the base of the hemorrhoid.

Rubber band ligation involves the use of a banding instrument that is used in conjunction with a proctoscope. The lighted instrument is inserted into your anal opening and is capable of placing the rubber band in the appropriate place on the hemorrhoid. Once the blood flow is discontinued the hemorrhoid eventually falls off.

Laser and Infrared Coagulation

This type of hemorrhoids surgery is also known as coagulation therapy and can be performed in an outpatient clinic or doctor’s office. Coagulation therapy is performed with an instrument that contains an infrared laser beam which is directed on the base of the hemorrhoid tissue. The heat from the infrared beam stops the flow of blood to the hemorrhoid by causing the tissue around the hemorrhoid to scar. As a result, the hemorrhoid eventually dies and falls off.

The instrument that is used for infrared coagulation is quite costly so your doctor may not be able to perform the procedure and will refer you to someone who can. The procedure can be moderately expensive and it is possible that you will experience pain following the procedure.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is an older hemorrhoids surgery that is very rarely used in the present day. It is generally used for hemorrhoid conditions in people who are unable to withstand and other type of hemorrhoid surgery.

Sclerotherapy is performed in an outpatient clinic or doctor’s office and involves injection of a chemical known as phenol. The procedure is performed by injecting a dose of phenol at the base of the hemorrhoid which cuts off the flow of blood to the hemorrhoid and causes it to fall off. Following the procedure a scar forms in place of the hemorrhoid.

This type of hemorrhoid surgery can be painful and there is a risk of having an allergic reaction to the chemical however, the costs for sclerotherapy are relatively low.

Hemorrhoid Stapling

Hemorrhoid stapling is one of the newer types of hemorrhoid surgery and is generally used for prolapsed internal hemorrhoids. The procedure is performed by actually stapling the hemorrhoid to the anal wall.

Hemorrhoid stapling is performed by inserting a tubular instrument into the anal opening which causes the anus to dilate and pushes the hemorrhoids up against the lining of the anal wall. Once the hemorrhoids are pushed up against the anal wall some of the tissue is cut off through a suturing process and the remaining tissue is stapled to the anal wall.

Hemorrhoid stapling is less painful than other types of hemorrhoid surgery and the recovery time is much faster. The only drawback is that there is a good possibility that the condition will return and you will have to repeat the procedure.

Hemorrhoidectomy

This type of hemorrhoid surgery is only performed in extreme cases where the hemorrhoid condition is quite severe and there are no other options for providing relief.

The procedure is used when prolapsed hemorrhoids have developed blood clots in which there is no other choice but to remove the entire hemorrhoid. A hemorrhoidectomy is performed in a hospital and involves completely removing the hemorrhoids by cutting open the hemorrhoid and removing the blood clot. Following the surgery you will usually spend time in the hospital to recover before you can return home.
