How Horse Chestnut Can Heal Hemorrhoids

Horse Chestnut Horse chestnut is a tree that contains large clusters of flowers that have seeds that are inedible but are effective for treating various different health conditions including hemorrhoids. The seed extract has been known to be effective in improving varicose veins, pain and swelling, itching, and overall irritation. These are also the usual symptoms that accompany a hemorrhoid condition.

Hemorrhoids are an extreme annoyance and can be quite uncomfortable depending upon the type of hemorrhoid condition you have. When you have hemorrhoids it can seem like there is no relief in sight and it is very normal to feel that way when you are suffering from this condition.

If you prefer not to use over the counter treatments for hemorrhoids which contain chemicals and additives, there are hundreds of natural treatments you can use to provide relief from a hemorrhoid condition. One of the natural treatments you can use is horse chestnut.

Horse chestnut can prevent enzyme attacks on the walls of your veins which cause swelling. Since hemorrhoids are swollen anal veins the seed extract from horse chestnut can help to contract the veins which reduce the swelling of hemorrhoid tissue.

How Horse Chestnut Can Be Used for Hemorrhoids

Horse chestnut is prepared as a seed extract which contains aescin which is the active ingredient for treating a variety of health conditions. Aescin is an anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictor so if you have certain health conditions you should consult with your physician before using horse chestnut to provide relief from the symptoms of hemorrhoids.

With that said, here are a few different ways that you can use horse chestnut to help heal a hemorrhoid condition.

  • Capsules

  • If you suffer from internal hemorrhoids you can obtain horse chestnut capsules from your local health food store. The capsules often provide a sustained release of horse chestnut seed extract which will relieve the symptoms of internal hemorrhoids.

  • Topical Treatments

  • If you suffer from external hemorrhoids there are a variety of topical treatments that contain horse chestnut seed extract which you can obtain from your local health food store. The topical treatments are effective in relieving the itching and pain that is often associated with hemorrhoids.

  • Sitz Bath

  • A sitz bath prepared with warm water and horse chestnut seed extract can provide effective relief from the symptoms of hemorrhoids. Simply fill your bath with warm water and empty a few horse chestnut capsules into the water. Sit in the bath for 20 minutes a few times each day.

  • Tincture or Tea

  • Tea and tinctures that are prepared with horse chestnut seed extract can help to provide hemorrhoid relief. Simply empty a capsule of horse chestnut into your favorite tea or tincture to provide relief from hemorrhoids.

It is important to note that you should avoid making your own home remedies from scratch using raw horse chestnut. If you are not knowledgeable in this area the chestnut seeds, leaves, bark, and flowers contain a poisonous ingredient known as esculin. The processed forms of horse chestnut have little to no esculin and it is considered relatively safe to use for a hemorrhoid condition.

Before using horse chestnut to provide relief from the symptoms of hemorrhoids it is important to ask your physician if this is a safe method to pursue if you have other underlying health conditions that may be affected by the use of horse chestnut. Although horse chestnut is relatively safe it can produce some side effects that include nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort.
