Causes and Symptoms of Rectal Itching

man with rectal itching Rectal itching is one of the unpleasant symptoms that accompany a hemorrhoid condition. Hemorrhoids are varicose veins that become swollen and irritated from straining during bowel movements and passing hard stools among other factors that place undue pressure on hemorrhoids. Itchy Rectum occurs as the result of irritated hemorrhoids but it can also be a symptom of other health conditions.

An itchy rectum can be really annoying and incredibly uncomfortable and occurs from special nerve endings that extend from the rectum to the skin outside of the anal opening. Although rectal itching has common symptoms across the board it can be caused be a number of factors including a hemorrhoids condition.

Hemorrhoids and Rectal Itching

When hemorrhoids become irritated they often cause rectal bleeding and mucous secretions which result in itching around the rectal area. The temptation to scratch the area can be overwhelming and should be treated as soon as these symptoms surface.

Lack of Personal Hygiene

Poor hygiene can cause an itchy rectum when dried fecal matter and sweat are allowed to accumulate around the anal area. If you are suffering from hemorrhoids personal hygiene is a must not only to improve the condition but to prevent symptoms of itching.

Chronic Diarrhea

Chronic diarrhea can be a primary cause of rectum itching due to the continuous flow of fecal matter and frequent wiping of the anal area. It is important to keep the anal area clean during bouts of chronic diarrhea to prevent feces from building up around the area. In addition, diarrhea should be treated immediately to prevent excess wiping which further irritates the itching.

Fungal Infection

If the area around the anus is allowed to collect moisture for extended periods of time, this can result in a fungal infection around the anal opening and cause itching. A fungal infection often appears in the form of a rash and can be treated with a number of natural treatments as well as over the counter ointments and creams.

Intestinal Parasites

Intestinal parasites are often common in young children and exist in the colon and the rectum as pin worms. They are capable of exiting the rectum and leaving eggs around the anal opening which can cause severe itching. They can be treated with over the counter anti-parasite medicines and then the affected area can be treated with natural home treatments.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually transmitted diseases often exhibit symptoms of burning during urination, discharge, and itching. Depending upon the type of sexually transmitted disease the symptoms can range from painful to mildly uncomfortable and more often than not most of the different types of STDs cause symptoms of itching around the rectum.

Anal Cancer

Anal cancer occurs when malignant polyps develop on the rectum. They often secrete mucous and if irritated they begin to bleed which causes itching. In the event of anal cancer the only option is surgical treatment to remove the polyps and the follow up treatment is as recommended by a physician.

Although rectal itching can be really embarrassing, these are some of the reasons why you should still have it checked out by your physician. Chances are it is related to a mild condition of hemorrhoids but it always pays to be sure. Meanwhile you can prevent symptoms of rectal itching by thoroughly wiping after bowel movements, keeping the anal area clean, and avoiding products with perfumes and dyes.
