Different Types of Treatment for Internal Hemorrhoids

If you have an internal hemorrhoid condition there are different types of treatment for internal hemorrhoids that you can use to seek relief from the condition. Internal hemorrhoids are swollen anal veins that form on the inside of the anal canal. As a general rule, internal hemorrhoids are not painful but they can cause itching or pressure on the inside of the anal canal. In addition to that they may also turn into bleeding hemorrhoids or emit a mucous colored fluid.

If you are looking for an internal hemorrhoids treatment, here are a few types of treatments that are available for this specific type of hemorrhoid condition.

Home Treatment for Internal Hemorrhoids

In most cases of internal hemorrhoids, using a home treatment is an effective way to seek relief from the condition. You can take the following steps for home treatment:

  • Apply Cold Treatment

    • Place some ice inside a soft cloth and apply it to the anal area several times a day. You can also alternate this treatment by applying a hot damp towel to the irritated area.

  • Sitz Bath

    • Sit it a warm bath a few times a day and then make sure you thoroughly dry the area when you are finished. Avoid putting anything in the water that will irritate the anal area however, it is safe to add witch hazel to the warm bath.

  • Avoid Straining

    • Avoid lifting heavy objects or straining during bowel movement because this will cause undue pressure on the swollen anal veins which will cause them to rupture and bleed.

  • Increase Fiber Intake

    • Increase your intake of fiber by adding more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to your diet and drink more water.

  • Use a stool softener

    • Use a stool softener to soften your stool during a bowel movement. If the stool is too hard this can cause straining and pressure on the swollen anal veins.





Non-Surgical Treatments

Non-surgical internal hemorrhoids treatment is used for both small and large hemorrhoids. The procedure works by discontinuing the flow of blood to the hemorrhoid causing it to shrink. Non-surgical procedures can be performed in outpatient offices and include two types of procedures:

  • Rubber Band Ligation

    • A rubber band ligation procedure involves using a rubber band to tie off the hemorrhoids which cuts off the blood flow and shrinks the hemorrhoid.

  • Coagulation

    • This is a laser treatment for internal hemorrhoids that involves the use of an electrical current to burn the tissue around the hemorrhoid which will reduce the size and cause it to dissipate.


Surgical Treatment

Surgical treatment is used only for extreme cases where the internal hemorrhoids have grown quite large and the bleeding cannot be controlled by other treatments. While this usually takes care of the problem and discomfort, the long-term success of this type of treatment is also dependent upon how well you follow a high fiber diet, drink water, and exercise on a regular basis. Following these procedures changes your regular bowel habits which will keep the internal hemorrhoid condition in check.

Keep in mind that opting for surgical treatment for internal hemorrhoids can be costly and can cause pain, bleeding, and difficulty passing urine or stools. Before choosing any treatment for internal hemorrhoids it is always wise to consult with your physician.
