Treatments to Shrink Hemorrhoids

If you are suffering from a hemorrhoid condition you may be looking for treatments to shrink hemorrhoids. There are many treatments that you can pursue to provide relief from a hemorrhoid condition. Some of the treatments are temporary for providing pain relief and relief from the discomfort associated with hemorrhoids and other treatments are effective for shrinking or completely removing hemorrhoids altogether.

We have talked a lot about different types of treatments for providing relief from hemorrhoids on this website. Let’s talk about some of the specific methods that are used to provide relief from hemorrhoids by shrinking them in size. There are different treatments to shrink hemorrhoids all of which depend upon the type of hemorrhoids that you may have. Here we will discuss the different types of hemorrhoid conditions along with the methods that are used for shrinking hemorrhoids.

Internal Hemorrhoids

Internal hemorrhoids are swollen anal veins that are located on the inside of the anal canal. If internal hemorrhoids are mild you can shrink the swelling by using a suppository that is made of ice molded in a small cylindrical shape. This not only provides relief from the itching and discomfort it will also shrink the swelling as well.

If the internal hemorrhoids are prolapsed this means that they have broken away from the anal wall and are protruding from the anal opening. Prolapsed hemorrhoids can develop blood clots and become quite painful. Often a fixative procedure is used to shrink prolapsed hemorrhoids. The procedure is known as rubber band ligation in which a rubber band is placed around the base of the hemorrhoid to cut off the blood flow to the hemorrhoid which causes it to shrink and fall off.

External Hemorrhoids

External hemorrhoids are swollen anal veins that are located on the exterior of the anal opening. External hemorrhoids can be very painful especially if they become thrombosed. Thrombosed hemorrhoids are hemorrhoids that have developed a blood clot inside the hemorrhoid.

There are several different treatments that are used to shrink external hemorrhoids. This type of treatment to shrink hemorrhoids is performed in an outpatient clinic or doctor’s office.

  • Sclerotherapy

  • Sclerotherapy will shrink hemorrhoids by injecting a chemical into the tissue of the hemorrhoid. Once the chemical is injected is causes inflammation which contracts the veins and causes the hemorrhoid to shrink in size.

  • Infrared Treatment

  • This procedure known as infrared coagulation involves applying heat from an infrared light to clot the enlarged veins of the hemorrhoids which causes them to shrink and eventually fall off.

  • Laser Treatment

  • Laser treatment is similar to infrared treatment except an electrical current is applied to the hemorrhoid which triggers a chemical reaction and cuts off the blood flow to the hemorrhoid causing it to shrink and fall off.

Keep in mind that some of the above treatments are used for advanced stages of hemorrhoids. If your condition is mild you can use some of the home treatments we have described earlier in this article to shrink hemorrhoids, as well as some of the over the counter ointments and creams that will help to shrink the swelling of hemorrhoid tissue.

If you are unsure about the type of hemorrhoids you may have and would like to know more about the types of treatments to shrink hemorrhoids, consult with your physician so he/she can recommend appropriate treatment to shrink hemorrhoids and provide relief from the condition.
